West Melbourne

West Melbourne is less the western part of Melbourne than it is the area located to the west of Melbourne. It was a low, swampy area which has slowly developed into a series of markets, warehouses and docks. For an area so very close to the inner city, it is poorly served by public transport and has a population lower than that of any locality for at least 20 kilometres in any direction.

It is not, despite what you may have been told, named after anyone named West or Wesley. For that matter, its major geographical feature, Coode Island, was an artificially created feature rather than a natural one, and is no longer an island in any case.
