Ghostly existence

  • Type: This World
  • Origin: millions of ghost stories
  • Admission: variable, but primaily those who died with things unfinished (especially vengeance)

There’s a million reasons to become a ghost, but only one way: you have to die.

Once you’ve died, if you’re determined to be a ghost, you better hope that you felt very very passionately about something while you were alive, and that you left it unfinished at your death. This is most likely revenge – far and away the most common motive for becoming a ghost – but it might also be due to the simple failure to realise that one has died, or because you want your true love who survived you to find happiness with someone else (i.e. someone else who is also alive).

Of course, being a ghost is no bed of roses – you will have to deal with exorcists, the eventual death and destruction of the people, places and objects that care about, and, in some versions, fading away into a state of amnesia and eventually complete non-existence.
