I'll certainly grant your tactical point, but I didn't find any reference to the difference in arms in my (admittedly scanty) research.

"It is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles; if you do not know your enemies but do know yourself, you will win one and lose one; if you do not know your enemies nor yourself, you will be imperiled in every single battle." Sun Tzu

It didn't help either that the Indians had repeating rifles while the 7th Cavalry Regiment didn't, and that the 7th Cavalry Regiment tended to clump together making themselves larger targets.
