Chess variant: Divine Right

Divine Right is another pretty simple variation on Chess. It takes its inspiration from medieval traditions about the crowning of monarchs.

It works like this:

  • In regular Chess, any Pawn that reaches the final rank can transform into a Knight, a Bishop, a Rook or a Queen, but in the Divine Right variant, the Pawn can only transform into a Queen if there is a Bishop in a space adjacent to it in the last row. The Bishop need not be of the same colour as the Pawn.
  • Logically, this means that at any other time, the Pawn can only transform into a Knight, a Bishop or a Rook.
