Welcome back again

Welcome to the, well, not so much new look as new content The Centre Cannot Hold.

Starting from today, there will be at least three new posts each day – you can find out more about what to expect on each day of the week from new About page. It hasn’t changed that much, but it has changed a bit. There’s two new regular columns, plus all the stuff you’ve come to expect – and even more new features on the horizon.

Anyway, enough babbling from me – thanks for coming, and I hope you enjoy the show, folks.

Sorry about this lonesome October…

I got a new job, and I’m out of practice at working full time. So it is that I’ve not been doing much more than tinkering here – adding a book or two to the various Trade Paperback Timelines or a new film to Soundtrack Incomplete.

I am most upset about this state of affairs, and I do plan to remedy it at my first opportunity. At the moment, I’m looking at a November 1 relaunch, with new features and a revised weekly schedule. This will be preceded by a Weekly Update on October 31 listing all the new and revised content since the last one, and November 1′s offerings will lead off with a post detailing the new features here.

So in short, sorry there’s been little activity here of late, but that should soon be changing.

Less is More

Or at least, that’s the plan.

I’ve changed the feeds so that the one most of you are subscribed to will now provide only the posts in the Station Keeping category – primarily, the Weekly Update posts.

This is mostly so that you don’t get spammed with every little correction that I make to various posts, and also because the Soundtrack Incomplete category is only going to get larger and I don’t want to spam you with that either.

If you do still want to get everything, there is a link for that on the Feeds page so that you can – and if you should be interested only in one particular category or so, let me know and I’ll make a feed for that too.

Another thing you’re going to be seeing: I am trying to fill in all the missing days on the Rock’n'Roll History of the World – there’s no small number of dates that have no entry, and now that I’ve made that calendar so that people can look at particular days, it seems mean to leave so many of them empty. So those are going to be filling up too.

Anyway, hope these changes don’t distress anyone overly, and always happy to hear your feedback on this or any other aspect of the site.

Illness and Seeking Feedback

Sorry there’s been not much for the last week or so – I’ve been quite ill, and unfortunately, I didn’t have a lot of content queued up to cover the gap. I’ll try to be better prepared in the future.

While you’re here, I also wanted to ask you some things about this blog, so if you’ve got the time, please do fill out this poll:

It’s my Birthday!

And to mark the occasion, I’ve completed my modifications and revisions to the site, at least for now :)

So welcome to the new look The Centre Cannot Hold! It’s still got all your old favourites, but a whole new look and feel, as well as some new features.

In particular, I’ve resurrected my old Soundtrack Incomplete site from its untimely grave, and given it a new home here – not much of it is up and running yet, but there’s plenty of it already and much more to come.

I’ve also finally pulled my finger out and finished the last few days of Not So Lonesome – which has only been waiting since last October, so as you can plainly see, efficiency and progress are ours once more…

If you’re following this via RSS, you’re probably wondering why all this new content has passed you by. Don’t worry, you haven’t missed anything – I’ve just changed the way I do things is all. From now on, you’ll only get it by RSS if it’s something that falls under the Blog heading (as described on that page). However, starting next Wednesday, that will include a weekly post that lists all the new things that have been added to the site and all the old things that have been revised, with links to each.

I figure that way I won’t be constantly spamming you with stuff from Soundtrack Incomplete, at least.

Well, that’s all for now. See you again soon :)

Welcome to the centre…

The Center Cannot Hold is the blog of Loki.

And as you have almost certainly realised, the title of it derives from W.B. Yeats’ classic poem, The Second Coming. For those of you not familiar with it, the relevant section runs:

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand…

I can’t promise a revelation – but if I hear of one, I’ll be sure to let you know.

I know, I know, it’s a mess right now

I ask you to bear with me – I’m making some fairly major modifications behind the scenes, and soon I’ll be back, better than ever.

Sorry about that, folks

Minor glitch in that I couldn’t get to the site for a few days, and now that I can, all the pre-loaded content for the last four or five days has just landed on you in a big lump. I’ll try to keep things a little more orderly from here on in.

And we’re back

Back again, with more silliness and history and whatever else it is that it occurs to me to do.

There is one small thing: I’ve kinda lost my impetus on The Ducal Line. It’s not that I don’t want to finish it, because I do – but the inspiration is currently lacking. I will come back to it sometime, I’m sure, but for the time being, I’m going to be replacing it with a new feature, although it will be continuing to be original fiction written by me. That’ll start on Wednesday, and it’s going to be called Preventing Doctor Armageddon. I hope you’ll like it.

The reason I’ve been so absent of late, by the way, is that I’ve gone into business for myself, offering writing and editing services. You can find out more about that at the website of my business, The Melbourne Method. There’s even new original content there, too!

Anyway, stay tuned, because the fun new stuff I’ve got planned here isn’t limited to Preventing Doctor Armageddon, as awesome as that’s going to be.

Back again

Sorry about the indifferent posting lately. It’s been a busy month. But I’m back now, and I intend to try to keep up (maybe even get ahead a little). And I know, I know, I still need to finished Not So Lonesome. But not tonight.

Anyway, back now, some changes afoot and some announcements to come in the next little while, although it’s going to be a busy month for me, so some of those announcements might be a while off yet.

Thinking about this place

Sorry about the last week, folks – for some reason, the blog won’t let me into the backend from Firefox, but it will from IE. Unfortunately, it took me a few days to work that out. But now here we are again, and although this is frustrating to me, it’s at least workable.

At least this means I’ll be able to finish Not So Lonesome off – and please accept my apologies for the fact that you’re about to have the last 7 or 8 entries land on you today, but I do want to get it done before October finishes.

Likewise, I plan to go back and so at least some of the missing posts from the last few weeks, although not all of them. I’ll try to space those out a bit more so you don’t get swamped by them. In addition, there’s still Soundtrack Incomplete on the horizon – I can return to converting that to this site now that I have a workaround, and I’ll be trying to find a better fix for the problem here soon. In the meantime, at least it shouldn’t affect you there at the visible end of the blog.

Speaking of which, this has got me thinking about the behind the curtain parts of this blog, and that’s prompted me to write about those here, along with whatever other thoughts come to mind.

It surprises me how much of this blog is governed by little conventions that I’ve adopted in the writing of it. I thought I’d do everything openly, but over time I’ve adopted little rules here and there that govern the way I do things around here. Nothing sinister, per se, but idiosyncratic. For instance:

  • In writing entries for either the Pharmacopoeia Fantastica or 1001 Afterlives to Visit After You Die, I’m happy to include multiple entries from the one source, but I space them out at least a month apart. Not sure why I started doing that, but it probably had something to do with wanting variety – when I added the Pharmacopoeia, I didn’t want to start it off with four entries in a row all from Naked Lunch.
  • When writing The Ducal Line, I try to switch around my plot threads a little, so that no installment of a particular thread comes up more often than once a week. Although seriously, that particular part of this blog probably deserves a post like this to itself, it’s so different from how I envisioned it.

When I first started this blog, I had a different theme for it, which was much darker and less open than the current one. It did, however, have one advantage: it listed the date things were posted right up the top in hard to miss colours. That isn’t so important for most stuff (and indeed, is downright inconvenient for The Ducal Line), but it does matter for The Rock ‘n’ Roll History of the World. I’ve tried working the dates into the individual entries, but there are times that feels forced. So what I’ll be doing instead adding the date listing at the top of the Amazon carousel on each entry, just to make it easier to find. There’s about 180 individual entries so far on the list, so it will take a while to get through them all, but it will happen.
