2009 and counting

Welcome to Off the Page’s Edge. There’s a bunch of stuff here, some old and some new, with plenty more to come.

Starting later today is my new daily feature, The Rock ‘n’ Roll History of the World. See you back here for it in a few hours :)

Also new is the Trade Paperback Timelines section of this site – I won’t go into detail here, but you should click on the link to the left of this text to find out more about it.

A wee bit of silliness

Starting from tomorrow, there’s a whole new category of events to be found on The Rock ‘n’ Roll History of the WorldFictional events!

This has less to do with a shortage of real events (although the additional number of events this makes available is certainly a pleasant enough side effect), and more to do with a certain ineradicable whimsy on my part.

I do intend to play fair about it, though – there will be no events that are both Fictional and Dateless, although I make no such guarantees regarding the Futures category I’ll probably also be adding at some point.

Just so you know.

Adding some new content

It’s taken me a while to get them all done, but at least, the annotations for Keating! The Musical are completed and published here. You can find them at: http://thecentrecannothold.net/keating-the-musical-annotations/.

Be warned that, if you haven’t seen the show, they contain massive massive spoilers for the plot. On the other hand, if you know your Australian political history, that shouldn’t matter much either.

All Change

I’ve been chewing over this for a while now, and I’ve finally decided: I’m going to abandon the one day for each thing format. I find it too restrictive – and also, it delays the speed of feedback for any new thing I write.   So henceforth, although all the columns will be continuing, they’ll each be a little more irregular.  But on the upside, you’ll probably get more frequent updates overall.   And I will try to avoid putting two entries of the same column one after another, for variety’s sake.

This does also mean that Friday Fictions will now be called Fresh Fictions, but I doubt that will bother anyone :)

An announcement for fans of my Marvel Timelines

I’m very gratified by the popularity of this feature – it’s far and away the most popular thing on this whole site – and I’m always trying to come up with ways to improve it. In fact, for the last little while, I’ve been working on a massive revision and expansion of it. The new version of the timeline will have the following features:

  • More detail in each entry – information about what issues are reprinted in it for every volume, and more details if they’re warranted.
  • More and smaller pages, for quicker load times.
  • Titles explaining what period the page covers, rather than just the numerical titles.
  • A few more subsidiary timelines spinning out of the main Marvel timeline.
  • More subheadings on pages to make it easier to locate major events.
  • A more detailed listing of what’s on each page, again in order to make it easier to locate major events.
  • A Frequently Asked Questions section to cover some of the more general information about my assumptions and rules of thumb for the Timelines that doesn’t belong on those pages themselves.
  • …and more besides.

So I hope you’ll bear with me, ‘cos it will take a little while longer yet, before I have everything sorted out to my satisfaction, but I promise, it will be worth it when I’m done.

I’m working from start to finish on the timeline, so you’ll probably still see the occasional addition to the later pages in the chronology for a little while, but as I complete each page, I’ll be adding updates only to the newer pages until I’m ready to bring in all the revised versions at once.

And again, back in action…

Sorry about that folks.  Head go splodey for a few days, but all better now.

Back to the action.

And we’re back

Back again, with more silliness and history and whatever else it is that it occurs to me to do.

There is one small thing: I’ve kinda lost my impetus on The Ducal Line. It’s not that I don’t want to finish it, because I do – but the inspiration is currently lacking. I will come back to it sometime, I’m sure, but for the time being, I’m going to be replacing it with a new feature, although it will be continuing to be original fiction written by me. That’ll start on Wednesday, and it’s going to be called Preventing Doctor Armageddon. I hope you’ll like it.

The reason I’ve been so absent of late, by the way, is that I’ve gone into business for myself, offering writing and editing services. You can find out more about that at the website of my business, The Melbourne Method. There’s even new original content there, too!

Anyway, stay tuned, because the fun new stuff I’ve got planned here isn’t limited to Preventing Doctor Armageddon, as awesome as that’s going to be.

Back again

Sorry about the indifferent posting lately. It’s been a busy month. But I’m back now, and I intend to try to keep up (maybe even get ahead a little). And I know, I know, I still need to finished Not So Lonesome. But not tonight.

Anyway, back now, some changes afoot and some announcements to come in the next little while, although it’s going to be a busy month for me, so some of those announcements might be a while off yet.

Doom, maybe…

Folks, I’m temporarily out of cash to maintain this here beast.  (I’m not asking for a handout here, just letting you know).

I’ve made alternate arrangements – everything that was here lives on at the rather less inspired URL of www.paperedges.com (I should be able to automatically change the blogfeeds at FeedBurner, so this shouldn’t affect anyone who’s subscribed).

Heh.

I just realised that this post alone will not carry across :)

Ever have one of those days?

Things have been a tad chaotic lately around here. One might even say that the centre didn’t hold, or indeed, that things fell apart. One might, anyway.

I’ve fallen a little behind on this here blog, and while that isn’t too big a deal with some features – presumably History will still be being Rocked and Rolled next year as well – it’s kind of embarrassing when I make a big deal of something and then fail to follow through on it. That thing being, of course, Not So Lonesome. I’d like to plead good intentions and minor incompetence on that one, and illustrate with an example.

Last night, while trying to write the (conspicuously missing) entry for today’s Rock ‘n’ Roll History installment, I managed instead to write the entry for tomorrow. And then, realising my error, I wrote the entry for the fourth…
…of December.

Oh well, at least the December one’s a doozy: one of those great rock classics that few people seem to be aware was based on a true story.

Anyway, I’ll be getting back up to date today (and time permitting, filling in some of the entries that I missed, like the last Crossing Over), at which point let us all agree never to speak of this again.

Feeling crap

I’m sorry to report that after less than two weeks, my bold plans for keeping this site well fed with new content have fallen down a bit. There’s still some stuff lined up for the next few days, but at this point, I’m not expecting to resume full service until Tuesday. My fault for not making sure I was further ahead when I had the chance to, but I’ll work harder to make sure that doesn’t happen again in the future.

In the meantime, hope you’re all having a lovely weekend.

Finally fixed the Feeds

Sorry it took me so long, folks, but I have finally, as of this very evening, fixed the feeds. So if you now find that you’re being spammed with all sorts of wild and crazy stuff – well, you know who to blame.

Be seeing you all :)
