So after last week’s meditation on the Cthulhu Mythos, I tried to think of the most unlikely crossover I could for it. Having done that (“I Love Lucy”), I decided that I would instead look for a crossover I would enjoy writing.
And here we are. Be warned, spoilers abound for pretty much the entire Kevin Smith oeuvre.
There seems very little risk of the Mythos ever intersecting with the lives of Askewniverse residents at first glance. Not many of them seem to read for leisure (although perhaps the absence of Veronica from all films after the first is more sinister than it at first appears), so the chances of them running across a tome of forbidden lore seem pretty slim. Maybe if the Askewniverse centred on Innsmouth, Massachusetts instead of Leonardo, New Jersey.
But as I say, this is only true at first glance. There are any number of ways for the Mythos to intersect with the lives of our, err, guys:
- I’ve already suggested a more sinister explanation for Ronnie’s absence – did she perhaps transfer to post-graduate studies at Miskatonic University?
- Is it possible that Willam’s inability to see the sailboat runs deeper? Do Willam’s features, at a second glance, look a little… Innsmouthy?
- It seems fairly clear that Holden McNeil’s career in comics is more or less over – how far might he go to restore it? Would he perhaps share models with a Mr Pickman? Or what if Alyssa’s new girlfriend, attempting to correct her nerldly deficits, buys exactly the wrong book from exactly the wrong bookshop that’s never there again when she returns to it?
- If there were in fact more things in Heaven and Earth than were dreamt of in Alanis Morrisette’s philosophy (such as, for example, the ability to give examples of irony that were actually ironic), might Azazel make a deal with them? Dude got killed with a frikkin golf club – that’s got to hurt your pride.
- Just exactly what sort of deal might Missy, Chrissy and Sissy in order to get out of the slammer? (And if you’ve watched the deleted scenes – does Brent’s affection for goat extend to the Black Goat of the Woods with a Thousand Young?)
- Finally, what if Emma decided that just covering a man in cake wasn’t enough? What if she wanted revenge? I’m thinking it would Carrie Fisher in “The Blues Brothers” meets Julie Carmen in “In The Mouth of Madness”) Alternately, what might Jay resort to in order to stave off ‘boredom’?
Of course, if the Mythos were to rear any of its insanity-causing heads in suburban NJ, the chances are pretty good that no one would notice except Randal, Bob and Jay.
Which is to say: we’re all doomed, but at least there’ll be Star Wars references.
